In the group show, Category Error, the pleasure of subverting socially constructed categories through re-presentation is explored. Encyclopedic views and master narratives are put under the microscope; using found objects, domestic archives and repetitive technologies, the work ironically undercuts nostalgia for a pre-digital age.

Grindrod’s fascination with the didactic, painting and visual display manifests in painted panels and found-object installations. Through the act of painting, illustrations from childhood books are faithfully observed; the resultant shift in register affords strange slippages. Combining the paintings with found objects further extends the new associative possibilities Grindrod opens up.
