Gesturing Objects: Ghastly Tenderness and the Doubly Present

Solo Exhibition
Association for Visual Arts, Cape Town, South Africa
1 November – 30 November 2018

Grindrod’s work is informed by the idea of the ‘infra-thin’ – the close relation between one thing and another. Notions of the double, the surreal and slippages in meaning are set against painting’s relation to mechanical modes of reproduction and repetition.

Through her broad exploration of ritualised play – whether as carnival, festival or a child’s imaginal world – Grindrod seeks to evoke a certain atmosphere where the intertwining of the tender and the ghastly, the live and the deathly, are simultaneously evoked.
