Last Light
Solo Exhibition
Irma Stern Museum, University of Cape Town, South Africa
5 November – 26 November 2016
In the exhibition, Last Light, Josephine Grindrod takes a photograph of children playing in a landscape of personal significance as her dominant referent and uses this to explore the nature of pictorial and embodied imagination.
Situating this motif within the genre of a fête champêtre, Grindrod investigates themes of sensuality and innocence, fear and fantasy, power and play.
Shown at the University of Cape Town’s Irma Stern Museum at a time of intense social contestation, Grindrod seeks – through painting, drawing, print and installation – to expand notions of ‘encounter’, evoking an atmosphere redolent of tenderness, violence, desire and loss.
